Members

The Members of the MRT and the RRT are appointed under the Migration Act 1958 by the Governor-General for fixed terms on a full-time or part-time basis. The Remuneration Tribunal determines remuneration for Members and the Minister determines other terms and conditions.

Persons appointed as Members to the Tribunals have typically worked in a profession or have had extensive experience at senior levels in the private or public sectors. While there are no mandatory qualifications for the appointment of Members, the biographies indicate the depth of knowledge and experience that Members bring to the task of providing a final and independent merits review of decisions.

Until 30 June 2014 the membership comprises the Principal Member, a Deputy Principal Member, 5 Senior Members, 30 full-time Members (one full-time Member is acting as a Senior Member) and 54 part-time Members. All Members are appointed to both the MRT and the RRT.
